By direct visual examination, doctor's can diagnose genital warts. For female patients with genital warts, it is a common practice to test for HPV infection of cervix. Cervix examination is done with the use of a Pop smear Test. The test is a through and detailed examination of the cells scraped from the uterine cervix. If the doctor finds any abnormality in the test results, the patient is sent for further test for knowing the cause and nature of the abnormalities.

The physical examination of the thigh and pelvic region of the genital wart patients is done for the diagnosis. Although rare, genital wart some time develops in the mouth and throat.

With naked eye, the genital looks like a flat or raised bumps on the skin. These warts may be large or small, in groups or in clumps. Sometimes they look the head of a couliflower. This is the most distinctive feature that identifies a wart as a  genital wart .

Genital warts are flesh colored or lighter to skin color of the patient. Genital warts are either painless or sometimes associated with itching, pain and even bleeding.

Genital warts during its initial stage, starts as a soft fleshy growth of varying size. Normally, people in the initial stage ignores because it is painless. The virus HPV causes the genital warts. These HPV has a long incubation period. Doctor’s, who will suspect the presence of HPV, will prescribe certain tests. These tests results will either confirm or rule out the presence of HPV.

Genital warts must be diagnosed timely which is essential because of one particular reason. Untreated genital wart may lead to Cancer in certain organs in the pelvic region. That's why it is advocated that anybody who is having any semblance of a doubt about the presence of genital wart in the body must have medical check ups at regular interval and that is  the best way to diagnose the disease early.
